Scientific References 5‑Amino‑1‑methyl quinolinium (5‑AMQ) is a selective NNMT (nicotinamide N‑methyltransferase) inhibitor, a target linked to cellular metabolism, NAD⁺ homeostasis, and potential metabolic effects. NNMT’s role in adipose tissue and metabolic regulation makes NNMT inhibition a topic of interest in metabolic research models. What is 5Amino 1MQ Pen?

5-Amino-1MQ is a small molecule, not a peptide. Its full name is 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium. It was developed by researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch as an inhibitor of an enzyme called nicotinamide N-methyltransferase, or NNMT.

NNMT is found at high levels in fat tissue and is linked to how cells use NAD+ and handle energy. By blocking NNMT, 5-Amino-1MQ is thought to raise NAD+ levels and shift energy use in fat cells. It was designed to pass easily through cell membranes.

Also known as: 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium, 5-amino-1MQ, NNMT inhibitor

What are peptides?

What the research covers

5-Amino-1MQ has been studied in cell and animal research only. In a 2018 study, mice on a high-fat diet given the compound showed lower body weight and fat mass compared with untreated mice, without changes in food intake. Cell studies suggest it can reduce fat cell formation and raise NAD+ levels. Later mouse work has looked at muscle ageing and combined approaches with diet. No published human clinical trials are available, so effects and safety in people are not established. 5-Amino-1MQ is not approved as a medicine by the US FDA.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5-Amino-1MQ a peptide?

No. It is a small molecule that blocks the NNMT enzyme. It is listed alongside peptides because it is prescribed and supplied in the same way.

What does the research show?

Research is limited to cells and animals. Mouse studies suggest it may influence fat mass and NAD+ levels, but there are no published human trials.

What formats are available and how are they stored?

It is available as a pen or a vial. Keep pens in the fridge, and refrigerate vials after reconstitution, away from light. Follow the storage instructions on your pharmacy label.

Are there side effects?

Side effects can occur. Your GP will review your health, medication and, where relevant, blood results before prescribing, and you should report anything unexpected.
