What is SELANK?

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is based on tuftsin, a short peptide that occurs naturally as part of an immunoglobulin. A Pro-Gly-Pro tail was added to make it more stable in the body.

Researchers think Selank may act on GABA signalling and on the balance of enkephalin-degrading enzymes. Laboratory work also suggests it can influence the expression of genes linked to immune and nerve-cell signalling. These mechanisms are still being studied and are not fully understood.

Selank has been studied mainly in animal models and in small clinical studies from Russia. Animal work has looked at anxiety-like behaviour, memory and stress responses.
