What is SEMAX 10 SPRAY?

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide developed in Russia in the 1980s. It is built from a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, ACTH(4-7), joined to a Pro-Gly-Pro sequence that helps it resist breakdown. Unlike ACTH itself, it is not thought to stimulate the adrenal glands.

Researchers think Semax may influence brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor, which are involved in nerve-cell growth and plasticity. It may also affect dopamine and serotonin signalling. These mechanisms come mainly from animal studies and are not fully understood.

Semax has been studied mostly in cell and animal models. Rat studies have looked at memory, learning and the expression of BDNF in the hippocampus. Other animal work has examined nerve-cell protection after reduced blood flow to the brain. Some clinical studies in Russia have looked at Semax in stroke and other neurological conditions. These studies are generally small, and few have been replicated outside Russia, so the evidence remains early. Semax is registered as a medicine in Russia but is not approved as a medicine by the US FDA or the European Medicines Agency.
