SS‑31, also known as Elamipretide, is a mitochondria‑targeted peptide designed to protect and restore mitochondrial function — the metabolic powerhouse of every human cell. By selectively binding to cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane, SS‑31 helps stabilize mitochondrial structure, reduce oxidative stress, and enhance ATP production — the primary form of cellular energy. These actions make SS‑31 a compelling investigational peptide in research on energy decline, aging‑associated mitochondrial dysfunction, metabolic resilience, and cellular vitality support. Its unique mechanism distinguishes it from general antioxidants by acting directly where energy is produced within the cell. Key Features 🧬 Mitochondria‑targeted peptide — Engineered for specific interaction with inner mitochondrial membrane cardiolipin. ⚡ Supports ATP production — Designed to improve oxidative phosphorylation capacity in human muscle tissue. 🛡️ Anti‑oxidative mitochondrial stabilization — Helps reduce harmful electron leakage and oxidative stress at the source. ✒️ Pre‑filled sterile peptide pens for research use only — High purity delivery form for controlled experimental protocols. Human‑Relevant Research Applications 🔬 Enhances mitochondrial ATP capacity in older adultsA randomized, double‑blind, placebo‑controlled clinical trial in healthy older adults demonstrated that a single dose of SS‑31 (Elamipretide) elevated mitochondrial energetic capacity (ATPmax) in skeletal muscle in vivo compared with placebo — the first demonstration of improved oxidative phosphorylation capacity in human mitochondria after peptide intervention. Reconstitution & Handling Guidance 1️⃣ Use sterile bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol)2️⃣ Add 3 ml of bacteriostatic water to reconstitute the peptide3️⃣ Gently swirl until fully dissolved (do not vortex)4️⃣ Store reconstituted peptide at 4 °C–10 °C for 2–3 months5️⃣ Unreconstituted peptide can be stored at 4 °C–10 °C until the expiration date Key Benefits ✨ Boosts Cellular Energy – Enhances ATP production to support metabolic vitality and daily energy capacity. 🛡️ Protects Against Oxidative Stress – Stabilizes mitochondria and reduces electron leak‑related free radical formation. ❤️ Supports Heart & Muscle Function Research – Investigated in models of cardiac and skeletal muscle bioenergetics. 🧠 Neuroprotective Potential – Explored in translational research on mitochondrial‑linked neural health pathways. ⌛ Anti‑Aging Cellular Support – Helps maintain mitochondrial integrity, supporting research into age‑related energetic decline. 💪 Improves Exercise Tolerance & Recovery – Shows potential for enhancing mitochondrial performance in muscle tissue, a key driver of stamina in aging populations. Mechanism Summary • Cardiolipin binding — SS‑31 binds to cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane to stabilize cristae architecture and electron transport efficiency. • Enhanced oxidative phosphorylation — By improving mitochondrial energetics, SS‑31 supports ATP generation in skeletal muscle. • Reduced mitochondrial electron leak — Helps mitigate reactive oxygen species formation at the source, contributing to cellular redox balance. • Translational anti‑aging research relevance — Investigational across metabolic, cardiovascular, and neural models tied to age‑related mitochondrial dysfunction.
What is SS-31 10mg?
SS-31, known by its drug name elamipretide, is a small synthetic peptide of four amino acids. It was developed by Hazel Szeto and Peter Schiller as one of the Szeto-Schiller (SS) peptides. Its sequence includes a D-arginine and a modified tyrosine (dimethyltyrosine).
SS-31 is designed to enter cells and concentrate in the inner mitochondrial membrane. There it is thought to bind cardiolipin, a lipid that supports the proteins of the energy-producing electron transport chain. By interacting with cardiolipin, it is thought to help stabilise mitochondrial structure and function.
Also known as: Elamipretide, Bendavia, MTP-131, Forzinity
What the research covers
SS-31 has been studied in many animal models of heart, kidney, muscle and age-related mitochondrial dysfunction. In aged mice, early research suggests it may support mitochondrial function and exercise tolerance. Human research includes clinical trials in heart failure, primary mitochondrial myopathy and Barth syndrome, a rare inherited mitochondrial disorder. Results have been mixed across indications. In the TAZPOWER trial in Barth syndrome, the initial crossover phase did not meet its primary endpoints. A small long-term open-label extension reported improvements in some functional measures. In September 2025 the US FDA granted accelerated approval to elamipretide as Forzinity for Barth syndrome. It is not approved for ageing or general wellness.

Frequently asked questions
Is SS-31 the same as Forzinity?
SS-31 is the research name for elamipretide. Forzinity is the brand of elamipretide approved by the US FDA in 2025 for Barth syndrome. Our product is a compounded preparation prescribed by our GP, not the branded medicine.
What does the research on SS-31 show?
SS-31 has been studied in many animal models of mitochondrial dysfunction and in human trials for rare mitochondrial disease and heart failure. Results in humans have been mixed. It is not approved for ageing.
How should I store SS-31 and what formats are available?
We supply SS-31 as a pen or vial. Keep both refrigerated at 2-8°C. Follow the storage instructions on your pharmacy label.
Are there side effects?
Side effects can occur. Your GP will review your health, medication and, where relevant, blood results before prescribing, and you should report anything unexpected. Injection site reactions were the most common effect reported in clinical trials.
