What is TB500 Spray?

Thymosin beta-4 is a naturally occurring 43 amino acid protein found in most human cells. It binds actin, a structural protein that helps cells move and change shape. The name TB-500 is a commercial label rather than a scientific one. It is used both for synthetic full-length thymosin beta-4 and for a short fragment.

That fragment is often given as Ac-LKKTETQ, the actin-binding region of the full protein. Laboratory studies suggest thymosin beta-4 may influence cell migration, blood vessel formation and inflammation. These effects are being explored in tissue repair research.

Also known as: Thymosin Beta-4, Thymosin β4, Tβ4, TB4, TB500

What are peptides?

What the research covers

Thymosin beta-4 has been studied in cell and animal models of wound healing, heart injury, eye surface damage and muscle repair. Early research suggests it may support cell migration and new blood vessel formation in these models. Small human trials have tested full-length thymosin beta-4 in eye drops and wound gels, with mixed results. Most research uses full-length thymosin beta-4. Evidence for short fragments sold as TB-500 is much more limited. Neither thymosin beta-4 nor TB-500 is approved as a medicine by the US FDA.

Frequently asked questions

Which formats are available and how should I store TB-500?

TB-500 is available as a pre-filled pen, a cartridge for a reusable pen, a vial of freeze-dried powder or a nasal spray. Your GP will advise which format suits you. Store pens and cartridges in the fridge at 2-8C and do not freeze. Keep lyophilised vials cool, dry and away from light; once reconstituted, refrigerate at 2-8C, protect from light and do not freeze. Refrigerate nasal sprays after opening unless the pharmacy label says otherwise. Follow the storage instructions on your pharmacy label.

Is TB-500 the same as thymosin beta-4?

Not always. Thymosin beta-4 is the natural 43 amino acid protein. TB-500 is a trade name used for either a synthetic version of the full protein or a short fragment of it. Your pharmacy label states exactly what is supplied.

What does the research show?

Thymosin beta-4 has been studied in animal models of wound, heart and eye repair, and in small human trials of eye drops and wound gels. Evidence for TB-500 fragments specifically is limited. It should not be viewed as a proven treatment.

Are there side effects?

Side effects can occur. Your GP will review your health, medication and, where relevant, blood results before prescribing, and you should report anything unexpected.
