What is TRIPTORELIN?

Triptorelin is a synthetic analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), a ten amino acid peptide. It differs from natural GnRH at position six, where glycine is replaced by D-tryptophan. This makes it more resistant to breakdown and longer-acting.

Triptorelin binds the GnRH receptor in the pituitary. At first it causes a rise in LH and FSH, often called a flare. With continued exposure, the pituitary becomes desensitised, and LH, FSH and sex hormone levels fall. The overall effect depends on how often and in what form it is given.
